Diabetes is chronic metabolic disease characterised by elevated blood sugar levels. It is a major problem in the Pacific with some of the countries among the top 10 in the world with the highest prevalence of diabetes. Globally it is estimated that 422 million adults have diabetes of which 1.6 million die as a results annually each year.
